Sarah

The orphan who reads the photograph - and trusts no one but the streets she grew up on.

Sarah - a young orphan with long dark hair, in a worn patterned shirt and mended trousers, standing on a dirt path between corrugated-metal walls, clutching a cloth bag.

She has no surname on any document, but she has a name, a mother's bracelet, and the whole of Chợ Lớn mapped in her head. The city raised her; she owes it nothing and knows it by heart.

These pages are not a case file. They are the edges of a girl the frame never quite caught - the jokes she told Jörg, the lines she would not let anyone cross, and three small moments someone else happened to film. The rest is in the shadow.

Funny Experiences

The tricks she played when the cameras were down.

Once picked the pocket of a US advisor, only to discover he was carrying a wallet with a photo of his children. She put it back - and added a flower.

Tried to teach Jörg how to haggle in the market. He paid full price for everything.

“You're hopeless,” she told him. “The camera makes you blind.”

Hid a gecko in Jörg's camera bag as a joke. He didn't find it until he opened the bag in a darkroom. The gecko was fine. Jörg was not.
